Bulldogs v Pannal Lions (U9s cup quarter final 10 Feb 2013)

Our regular line up was Will KW GK, Billy, Jack, Kyle defence, Josh M midfield, Dan, R Mid, Ben S, L Mid subs James W & Harvey

The match which had been in doubt right up to the morning of  kick off was finally played at Almsford after a last minute pitch move from QE. It was extremely heavy due to an earlier game and was played in constant rain.

Here we go again, a poor start conceding a goal in the second minute due to a bad defensive mistake which present the Lions with an open goal 0-1

Not long after, a needless penalty was conceded making the score 0-2.

The boys and the game then seem to settle and the pattern throughout was constant attacking from the Lions and the Bulldogs defending magnificently, William making some excellent saves with Billy, Jack & Kyle helping to protect their goalkeeper with a first class defensive display. Josh was working hard in midfield with Ben & Dan playing unfamiliar roles abandoning their natural attacking instinct to cover up and down both flanks, constantly pressuring and tackling which frustrated the Lions wide players, who were unable to attack with their usual freedom.

This excellent defensive display limited the lions to a final 3-0 victory and with many of us trying to watch the Terriers at the same time the tie hung in the balance.

With the Terriers winning 4-1 in their game this took the game into extra time doing nothing for the nerves of the spectators watching!

Extra time was played in which Terriers went 1-0 ahead, Lions equalizing v the Bulldogs then the Terriers going 2-0 up putting us back in the lead. The Terriers then went 3-0 up and this put us two in front and going through. However, our two goal cushion did not last long when the Bulldogs went 2-0 down-score now overall 3-2 to us! The bulldogs kept battling and were visibly tired but the Lions coaches & spectators were become increasingly frustrated and quiet-a good sign.

The final whistle sounded after what seemed an age (9 minutes we are told) and we are through to the semi-final-what an achievement with the final aggregate score being 7-6.

Summary

From William in goal to James as sub, all of the boys played magnificently and each one could be named man of the match for their efforts although for his excellent display in goal, William deserves special mention.

The Bulldogs were playing against their stronger team who are a good side and to restrict them to 5 goals over 35 minutes was an excellent display bearing in mind we haven’t played for 2 months and training has been restricted by the weather.

All 8 of our players covered themselves in glory (and mud!) and the whole team’s faces at the end of the match were a joy to see. This is also true for the parents and coaches who were rewarded for their support over the season for this epic win!

A big thank you to Steve and all the coaches for tactically outsmarting the Lions by playing the Terriers against a slightly weaker team in the belief that they would score enough goals to give the Bulldogs some leeway which worked a treat although a bit too close for comfort at times!

Well done to everyone as this was a true Pannal Ash team performance as a unit, rather than two different sides which is paramount in every fixture we play whether it is league or cup ties.

And bring on Beckwithshaw in the semi-final, nothing to fear from now on after today’s display.

Apologies for no report in the 2nd match which the Bulldogs lost 3-1 although we were 3-0 down at half time and pulled one back in the second half. A great display from Harvey in defence in the first half was noticeable, so well done to him for giving us some fresh legs and an excellent display.  The report writers had gone home at half time as Dan had taken a knock on his ankle and his mum and grandad needed a lie down.
